| Well I have given it 2 seasons of just match fishing....it was very very very hard when I first tried these waters...but gradually the persistence is beginning to make it just and only just a little easier. I now know I need 1 mile deep rigs, to sit for hour after hour without seeing a bite and then when a bite occurs you think you are hallucinating.
Today was the Xmas match and there was an excellent turnout of folk not expecting to catch a fish. That said most of us did despite the wind for most. Lee "I will continue to win" won again and I want some of his magic dust or whatever it is that he has. Guest appearance of Mr Herrington's son was welcome and he framed!!! and somewhat inevitably so did Mr Jackson.
Amazing to see waggler only John battle with the elements trying to put his brolly up..I couldn't understand why he had to get down on all fours to do it and see him on all fours trying to do it for about 5 minutes.
As for me I constantly try and do something different from the Fallows and Jacko's and thought I would try tip off peg 23 using red maggot or squatt on a fine wire size 18 hook attached helicopter rig style. A change from a short 9 in hooklength to a 3 ft hooklength resulted in a bite after an hour and one sucked out red squatt. Stuck with the feeder rig for another hour. The cunning plan was failing miserably. Out came the scratching rig the one that takes about 3 minutes to sink to the bottom of its 6 ft length cause it is so light and hey presto an elastic stretching roach on a white and red combo squatt baits. I found that just by using my top 2 and letting the rig trot into the weed i could get bites... Last hour 5 roach for 13 oz,,,,,,Now if I had cottoned on to this earlier 3 time 13 is 39oz which is 2 and a 1/2 lbs and I would have given Fallows a run for his prize money....yeah right.
Thanks to Furness Angling Association for these matches,,, really enjoyed them including the dry net ones..... Even Pat who had more dry nets than me wants to come back next year,,,so be prepared for those 2 From Burnley turning up in June 2010 again.
cheers,
G. |
